Zach’s Internet Scrapbook [September 24th, 2010]
Things that I recently read on the Internet (and think are actually worth reading).
Topics in this edition: China, Immigration, Stephen Colbert, The Pope, Nazis, Atheism, Japan, Currency, Girl Power
Is there a currency war going on between the US and Japan? What can we do to help 50 million 12-year-old girls living in poverty? How graphic should war coverage be? Why do we care so much about Internet control in China when it can be found everywhere in the world? Did the Pope compare atheism to Nazism? Should Apple approve an app that teaches evolution? And why is Stephen Colbert so funny?

Back to School Tips:
- Many people think that you can never be friends with your roommate. I, for one, do not buy that. I’ve had AWESOME roommates throughout my life. But for those of you who aren’t as lucky, here is a little article on how to forge a healthy relationship between you and your roommate(s).
- I’ve always wanted a Cornell Notebook. Now Lifehacker shows you how to make one yourself, as part of their Back to School series.
Investopedia:
- Investopedia Term of the Day: The Jones Act
China:
- After a series of worker suicides this year, Foxconn has decided to host some anti-suicide rallies to educate their workers about the importance of life. Meanwhile, Foxconn also announced that it would hire 400,000 more Chinese workers within a year. Recession? Where?
- Foxconn isn’t the only company expanding in China. Levi’s has unveiled a new global brand targeting the Chinese market. I remember going back to China earlier this year and simply being flabbergasted by how ridiculously expensive Levi’s jeans are in China. This is about to change with the new brand.
- Learning how to use chopsticks can be a arduous task. Lifehacker shows you how to make a simple chopsticks training set with the help of a rubber band.
Clothes:
- How to match the color of your clothes with that of your skin tone? What to do with the wrinkles on your shirt? When is the best time to buy different types of clothing online? Three articles give you all the answers.
Location War:
- Facebook may have just dethroned FourSquare as the king of the location-based social networks, with the announcement of “Places”. But FourSquare is still the King of Romance. Heck, there even seems to be a secret love affair between Facebook and FourSquare. Meanwhile, don’t forget to check me out on Facebook and FourSquare, among many other social networks.

News
- China has over taken Japan in second quarter to become the 2nd largest economy in the world, but India may outgrow China by 2015, even though India is still not in the Top 10 Largest Economies list.
- Has this new-found economic power given China the confidence to dump US long-term treasuries?
- The long and unnecessary legal battle known as California gay marriage continues. Gay marriages in California are halted once again, while south of the border Mexico City’s gay adoption law is upheld by the Mexico Supreme Court.
- Have we – the proud owners of Android phones – become the new “data hogs”?
Trickery
- How much do people around the world like China? Apparently very little, according to this WSJ interactive graphic. But notice how the graph only displays net percentage of people having positive views of China. So that tiny little blue bar above the U.S. actually means around 55% of people in the U.S. do like China, which is higher than the approval rate of Obama in the U.S. Now China doesn’t look that bad any more, does it?
Interesting
- We all know Chinese restaurants are everywhere, but were there Chinese restaurants in the Khmer empire?
Advice
- Note to myself: this is how you should address as a “post-collegiate adult male“. Bye-bye, Threadless T-shirts.
History
- Who played a bigger role in ending WWII? The notorious atomic bombs, or the Russians?
Annoyance
- This is the perfect example of abusing your power and fame: giving away your enemy’s phone number to your 4.5 million followers on Twitter. Who did that? Justin Bieber. GASP.
