[X Factor Review] Season 7 Live Show 7
TweetFirst of all, sorry for not reviewing the show last week (and a general lack of updates over the past couple of days). I was having a really busy week. Anyways, now I am back and will continue my review of the most awesome talent show on TV – THE X FACTOR!
It’s The Beatles week on X Factor! (Aside: Did you know that one of the most heated edit wars on Wikipedia is over whether it should be “the Beatles” or “The Beatles”? I am using the latter.) After finally coming to the biggest online music store this week and completely dominating the chart, The Beatles are now on the biggest talent show as well. This is how you initiate a second wave of musical invasion!
1. Matt Cardle – “Come Together“
My comment: Awful. This is probably Matt’s worst performance so far. I am so tempted to use the word “pretentious” on this performance, especially since Aiden – the former King of Pretentiousness has now been eliminated from the show. Maybe it’s because there is such a huge discrepancy between the image Matt is trying to present on the show and his true self in real life that it has become increasingly hard for me to feel personally connected to his performance any more. On top of that, WHAT are you wearing tonight, Matt?!?!
My prediction: Safe
2. Cher Lloyd – “Imagine“
My comment: Cher is singing a Glee song! Hooray! Oh wait, this song was actually first sung by The Beatles – or at least, a Beatle. Oh well. Thank God, Cher did not rap in this song. And she was perching on top of a shiny staircase at the centre of the stage. Shiny!!! This performance further proved that Cher can sing, but it also proved that Cher can’t sing every song. She managed to turn such an iconic and emotionally-charged song into something completely devoid of emotions. Maybe it would have helped if they had not chosen to slow down this song so much.
My prediction: Safe
3. One Direction – “All You Need is Love“
My comment: Sorry, I fell asleep halfway through the performance.
My prediction: Safe
4. Rebecca Ferguson – “Yesterday“
My comment: Are you surprised to learn that this song is one of the most covered songs of all time? I am not, because I once sang this song at a Chinese Karaoke lounge. And now my favorite contestant of this season has decided to follow my footsteps and sing her own version of the song. And what a fantastic version it was! This is how you slow a song down without making it boring. This is how you make a song your own without sounding pretentious. Most importantly, this is how you sing an emotional song. Brava!
My prediction: Safe
5. Mary Byrne – “Something“
My comment: Mary’s performance this week is so much better than the last couple of weeks. But her charm and confidence seemed to have slipped away. I believe she will be the last one standing in the “Over” category – there is no way that Wagner will outlast her. At the same time, I am afraid that she will not make to the final four.
My prediction: Safe
6. Paije Richardson – “Let It Be“
My comment: The first half of the song was so sweet and comforting, but the second half was so over-the-top and redundant. I think I am just too haunted by and partial to Brooke White’s cover of the song on American Idol.
And did you know that Paije was in Harry Potter before? That’s so much cooler than being on X Factor.
My prediction: Safe
7. Wagner – “Get Back” / “Hippy Hippy Shake” / “Hey Jude“
My comment: First of all, this is not a mashup. He just sang three songs in a row and ruined all three of them. Second, WHY?!?! Why is he still in the show? And why did he have to sing Hey Jude? WHY?!?!
My prediction: Bottom Two – Eliminated
8. Katie Waissel – “Help!“
My comment: I don’t know why the British public kept putting her in the bottom two. Yes, the performance this week sounded a bit desperate, but in terms of singing, she is much better than Wagner, Mary, One Direction and Paije. On the other hand, we all know this is not a singing contest.
My prediction: Bottom Two – Safe
My favorite performance of the night? Rebecca’s Yesterday!
